What is
Menopause?
Menopause occurs when the ovaries stop producing eggs and produce fewer female hormones, resulting in a decline in estrogen and progesterone levels. The average age for menopause in Australia is 51 with a typical age range of 45–55 years.
Menopause is preceded by a transition period called perimenopause, during which women may experience various symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, and insomnia. Once a woman has gone 12 consecutive months without a menstrual cycle, she is considered to have reached menopause. Menopause is a normal part of the aging process and is not a disease or a pathology.
What are the
Symptoms?
Here are some common symptoms of menopause:
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Changes in mood, such as low mood or irritability
- Difficulty sleeping, which may make you feel tired and irritable during the day
- Changes in skin conditions, including dryness or increase in oiliness and onset of adult acne
- Breast tenderness
- Vaginal dryness
- Slowed metabolism and weight gain
- Depression, anxiety, and mood swings
It’s important to note that not all women experience all of these symptoms, and some women may experience symptoms not listed here. If you’re experiencing symptoms related to menopause, you can speak to someone at your GP practice about your symptoms and ask if they’re related to menopause. You can also use a menopause symptom questionnaire to keep a note of your symptoms and how you’re feeling, which you can share and discuss with your healthcare professional to help them understand the different symptoms you’re experiencing.
